Freddy the Frog – May 18, 2009

“If we wait for the moment when everything is ready, we shall never begin.” – Ivan Turgenev

This is Freddy the frog. He’s a funny little fellow, because I used spackle under the paint to give him lumps and bumps. When I scanned it into the computer, all the lumps became recesses. He is still quite a character.

2.5″ x 3.5″ watercolor, spackle and gouache

Maggie – May 15, 2009

“The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right place, but to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.”
– Lady Dorothy Nevill
This is a little scratchboard I did of Maggie.
It’s 4″ x 6″

Eufaula Yacht Club – May 14, 2009

“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life; define yourself.”
– Harvey Fierstein
I like that. it could be…. Accept no one’s definition of your art; define your art, yourself. Yeah!!

This is a logo I designed for the Eufaula Yacht Club. I loved being able to use some whimsey in a logo. This is mainly for T-shirts and such. The boat in the second version belongs to my friend, George. I am really glad I did this, because he no longer has that boat, but he will always have this logo.

Edward Hopper – May 13, 2009

“Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even.”

– Muhammad Ali

La La Landscape – May 11, 2009

“Don’t carry a grudge. While you’re carrying a grudge, the other guy’s out dancing.”

– Buddy Hackett

9″ x 12″ Acrylic – “La La Landscape” photo reference by Jeanne Grant
I really enjoyed painting this one. I rarely work in Acrylics, but I am planning a Lake Eufaula series, for a Eufaula Area Arts Council show at the Main Street Gallery. It’s a members only show and I think a series like this will be a fun one to do.

American Flamingo – May 8, 2009

I participated in a Masters ATC swap on WetCanvas last year. This was one of the ATCs I did. It is my version of “American Flamingo” 1838 by John Audubon. Watercolor & Gouache 2.5″ x 3.5″
Having no formal art education, I really enjoyed doing these. I was amazed that these paintings were so much more complicated than they looked. It was a great learning experience.

Downtown Eufaula – May 7, 2009

It is not fair to ask of others what you, are not willing to do yourself.
— Eleanor Roosevelt

Downtown Eufaula – 2.5″ x 3.5″ Watercolor

Equality is a state of mind. When we value our own self-worth, we are comfortable with the achievements and the well-being of our friends and associates. The symptoms of a punctured ego occur when we criticize others and make demands we don’t want to fulfill ourselves.

Most of us experience wavering self-confidence on occasion. It may haunt us when a big task faces us. Or it may visit us when we least expect it. It’s a facet of the human condition to sometimes lack self-assurance. At times we need to remember that life is purposeful, and the events involving us are by design.

Almost daily we’ll face situations we fear are more than we can handle, and we’ll hope to pass the task off to another. It’s well for us to remember that we’re never given a task for which we’re not prepared. Nor should we pass on to others those activities we need to experience personally if our growth is to be complete.

I must do my own growing today. If I ask others to do what I should do, I’ll not fulfill my part of life’s bargain.

–Karen Casey

Freckles – May 6, 2009

“A mistake is simply another way of doing things.”– Katharine Graham
Freckles – 2.5″ x 3.5″ watercolor
I remember the first time I heard an artist talk about a happy accident. (I bought the painting, by the way.) She made what some would have thought was a mistake and turned it into a painting that I have always been happy that I own. It’s a wonderful little burst of color that became the most amazing light in her little cabin painting. I’ll take a mistake like that anytime.
